About
Dogu, netsuke, and numerous other types of human figures and figurines have been made in Japan as objects of worship or collectable items since the dawn of history. Popular in recent years are the scale models of anime characters, food, plants, animals, and cultural objects. Human-shaped objects and today’s model figures arguably represent one of the unique traits of Japanese art and culture.

Focusing attention on the human figure, this exhibition surveys the history of Japanese figurines—dogu, netsuke, and dolls to name just a few—through the ages. The exhibition also takes a look at the rich world of figures today by showcasing the works of Kaiyodo, Japan’s foremost model figure manufacturer.

Held to mark the 25th anniversary of Tokushima Modern Art Museum, where “The Human Figure in the 20th Century” is among the permanent collection’s major themes, this exhibition explores figures from multiple perspectives.
